Scrap Tires to Energy
Used tires are processed in the WRT system utilizing both its primary and secondary shredding technology. Tires to be marketed as tire derived fuel may be sold either whole or shredded into chips.
Subsequent to the shredding process WRT gasification and pyrolysis technologies(2) can be used to break tire rubber; a thermo set material, into its primary marketable components which include steel, carbon, condensable gas and non-condensable gas which may be either sold and/or used as process fuel. The pyrolysis process thermally degrades tires in the absence of oxygen. In the gasification process materials are exposed to some oxygen, but not enough to allow combustion to occur.
There are many advantages^1 to gasification and pyrolysis versus normal incineration which inlude the following;
Fewer emissions are produced as a result of the low oxygen environment.
Plants are modular and can be added to or subtracted from as waste stream volumes change.
Gases, oils, and chars are produced which can be used as fuels or further purified for feedstock in other applications
Syngas can be used to generate electricity more efficiently than steam turbines
